Wilbury School is the realization of a long-cherished dream. The inception of this idea dates back to 2001 when I was in London, working as an assistant in a Nursery School. The profound joy and fulfillment derived from the job motivated me to embark on the journey of establishing my own nursery.
As my own family grew, so did my passion for caring for young ones. Juggling work and parenting became challenging, prompting me to take a hiatus from my job and devote my time to looking after my children and those of close friends. This rewarding experience spanned four years and deepened my connection with the children.
My commitment to caregiving intensified when I transitioned to a role in the Elderly Ward at North Middlesex Hospital in 2005. Engaging in tasks such as feeding, bathing, and assisting those unable to care for themselves, I pursued classes in NVQ-Health Care, obtaining certificates in NVQ level 2&3. Before leaving the hospital for Ghana, I held the position of Health Care Assistant, Grade B.
In August 2010, I returned to Ghana with my family, harboring the persistent dream of establishing a nursery. However, it wasn't until I connected with Nana Ama Ansong, an old friend operating a nursery in Accra, that my dream gained momentum. Witnessing the excellent care provided to children at her school reignited my passion, and with Nana Ama's unwavering support, I decided to turn my dream into reality.
With the assistance of friends in London, who shipped essential items like toys, comforters, puzzles, and storybooks, I began preparing my house in July 2016 to create a Montessori-inspired haven for children. By mid-September 2016, after meticulous painting, tiling, and decorating, Wilbury Nursery School opened its doors to the public. Initial advertisements were spread through flyers and word of mouth.
On September 20, 2016, Wilbury School welcomed its first three children – Tracy Nkansah, Chief Ofori, and Nana Ama Omari, the latter being my sister's daughter. The vision was to provide a nurturing environment, a home away from home, and a play-and-learn sanctuary for children in the community.
